Historic Preservation & Adaptive Reuse

Many of Montchanin Design Group’s projects have involved renovations and/or additions to historic structures, and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings for new uses. Projects have included residential and commercial uses. Montchanin Design Group has provided services on several projects under the National Historic Tax Incentive Program as well as State of Delaware Historic Tax programs. Projects have been located in sensitive areas including the historic districts of the City of New Castle, the City of Wilmington, and Kennett Square, PA. Working with all stakeholders in the process, we provide creative, sensitive solutions with attention to detail while complementing and reinforcing the historic character of the original property.

Sustainable Design

Building codes, operating costs and public awareness are creating more emphasis on the concept of sustainable design.

We provide experience with sustainable building concepts, including inclusion of salvaged materials and use of sustainable new building products.

We have worked with passive and active solar energy options, including green roofs and photo voltaic panels.

We incorporate efficient heating and cooling options, including geothermal.

Utilizing energy modeling and daylighting programs, we can evaluate the relative effects of glazing, orientation and shading, insulation levels and building systems efficiencies to achieve a balance between initial cost and operating cost. Working with engineering consultants we can incorporate LEED and EnergyStar concepts and strategies to provide efficient building solutions.
